For years, this has been the one thing that makes all Cebuanos proud of their roots. What person would not love to go out if there are a lot of contingents dancing in the streets, with all of their wonderfully colored and intricately-made costumes and make-up.

Year in and out, there are a lot of tourists local and foreign alike who would visit the city and witness the festivity. Aside from the festivities, this is also a religious event that is made in honor of the patron saint of the city, the Sto. Nino.

It is said that the image of the child Jesus was brought by the Spanish colonizers to the native tribe of Cebu which was led by Datu Humabon. It was given to his wife as a gift. One day, the tribe’s nipa huts where burned down by some unknown men. The image was placed inside a box and while everything else turned to ashes, the image remained perfect. It never was scathed and it simply turned dark. This, later became the popular mark of the patron saint of the city.

This is a festival that is known not only for all of the wonderful things and sights that people witness on the street but this is also a witness of the people’s faith. All of the people in the mardigras are going to dance in the “Sinulog” which literally means the flow of the water of the river, which means two steps forward and a step backward. This is being done to honor the child Jesus.
